Young Toussaint Character Breakdown

Young Toussiant: (LEAD) 11 years old.  Haitian American boy genius who hides his smarts playing the class clown to be accepted.  He can dance like Michael Jackson and is funny like a young Dave Chappelle.  This kid has serious charisma. 

 

Grandma Roselette:  70s.  Toussaint’s freedom fighter grandmother.  If Yoda was an opinionated Haitian old woman with a ridiculous sense of humor. A rebel with a big cause.  Character speaks Creole and English.  Great comic timing. 

 

Theo: 30s..  Tousssiant’s momma’s boy Dad.  Haitian/ American character who speaks Creole and English.  Great comic timing, comic relief character.  . 

 

Ms. Erikson: (SUPPORTING) Late 40s - early 50s.  Toussaint’s 6th grade history teacher. On the surface a kind liberal soul but underneath a neo conservative soul crusher.  Think Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest meets Marjorie Taylor Greene.    

 

Apollonia: 12 years old.  The prettiest white girl in school.  Despite family disapproval, she has an active crush on Toussaint.   She struggles with meeting parent expectations and staying true to herself. 

 

Vinny: 13 years old. Toussaint’s hilarious chubby friend.  Proud Italian American 6th grader.   His favorite spot to take a nice nap, Ms. Erikson’s history class.  Some play sword fighting and fake blood.   

 

Preston Jackson: 11 years old.   Handsome kid with blonde hair and blue eyes. Rich spoiled kid.   

 

Vinny’s Cousin (non-speaking): 11 years old.  He’s part of Toussaint’s secret plan.  Some play sword fighting and fake blood.   

 

Red Neck #1:  Late 30s or 40s.  Big bearded, great comic timing, chubby.  

 

Red Neck #2:  Late 30s - 40s.  Big bearded, great comic timing, chubby.  

 

Lincoln: 11 years old.  6th grader resembling Abraham Lincoln.  

 

Columbus: 11 years old.  6th grader resembling Columbus.  

 

Little Chief:  11 years old. Native American/ Latino boy..  Plays indian chief in the school play. 

 

Black Student #1: 13 years old, boy. Plays a leader of slave rebellion in school play. 

 

Black Student #2:  12 years old, girl.  Plays a leader of slave rebellion in school play. 


 

Background Players

 

General Note: 

We’re creating a stylized comic rendering of upper middle class Brooklyn 1989.  If possible, get some great character faces in addition to stereotypical NY yuppie dad/ soccer mom parents. The priest, nuns, rabbi and grandparents should have character faces.
